The BERS Are Here
We have arrived. Ahhhhh…. I can smell the change in the air- the subtle change in light and color that is already beginning. All year I await this day- No, not back to school (although that’s just two days away!), but the first day after the Bachanal that is Labor Day, when, at least in my little untold book, Fall begins. From here on out, it’s cool, smooth sailing. The “Bers” are here, baby!
…junejulyaugust septemBER octoBER novemBER decemBER. Ber Ber Ber Ber! Notice a pattern? It’s my very favorite time of year- the time I look forward to to carry me throught the dog-gone long hot days of evil summer. Ber, not just a suffix, but a lovely onomotpaeia for the coming change in the weather and the season. Whoo-hooo!
As I sit at my desk, with Phoebe behind me and Beanie hanging on my left arm jumping up and down like a rabbit on crack, I can see random yellow leaves floating and lightly landing on the warm grass. Still mostly green, the trees have a massive surprise for us our first Fall here. I have a feeling we are going to be burried in leaves soon- we have over a dozen very big deciduous tress in our yard. Leaf-jumping piles ought to be plentiful.
My whole body relaxes and settles into a rhythm when the hotness and hell of summer finally abates. It’s like I’ve been holding my breath for three months, and now the tension in my belly can uncoil. I can breathe again. *Siiiiiiiigh*
So, welcome Fall. Autumn. Herbst. L’autumn. And whatever other language I don’t know- Yay for the changing seasons!

I love that, the ‘Bers. And I am totally with you. Fall is my favorite favorite time…everything about it is good. The temperatures, the smells, the food, the clothes, the holidays. Love it. Happy Fall!
Oh, you are making me so sad! I miss that autumn feel — the crispness in the air. The feeling of …well….autumn! Experiencing my first year in California, I’m not sure if I’m going to handle living without a real autumn. ~sigh~
Now that all my babies are safely in school for the year, I can sit back and enjoy the BERs too. I think I’ll try a bunch of new recipes for comfort food. And eat a lot of squash.
Great post – thanks for pointing this out. I love noticing the change in the sunshine patterns too.
Yay! My favorite time of year!! Happy Bers!
I could handle summer when I live in a dry climate, but now I dread it too!
Humid heat is just too oppresive.
And I’m totally looking forward to leaves falling, even if we don’t have any trees of our own (or a rake of our own….so no easy pile jumping)
What a neat way to look at the seasonal changes. “The Bers”. Too cool. I love fall. The temperature is finally supposed to drop this week and I’m very happy about that!
You’re back!!! I think I took you off my sidebar because…well. You were gone. I’m so glad your back! And I’m glad you stopped by my blog or I never would have known!!
I too love the “Bers!” Favorite time of the year… well, it used to be. I love the changing of the leaves. The cool crisp air. The smells, the tastes, the colors… now, I live in the desert. The leaves don’t change colors. They don’t have harvest. And I would NEVER call the air crisp. EVER. Sigh… missin the Northwest today…
Amen sister! I love autumn…going home to decorate as soon as the rugrats go home for the day!
I miss it already! This will be my second season of the SERS so far south, it’s just not the same! Maybe I’ll have to go and make a pumpkin pie and remember the memories of the BERS growing up! And then of course EAT the pies! ohh, or maybe an apple crisp….both!
Sept was my favorite month in Seattle. Usually there’s warm sunny days, with pale sunlight, cool evenings, such a bittersweet feel to it.
Guess what? That’s what it’s like in Cali all winter long! I love it!
Susan, you’re right- that’s winter in So Cal, but I always hated when it was 75 degrees on Christmas. Just hated it, even as a girl. I’m glad you’ve found your mojo in So Cal.
Ah, falll…..I love it too. We’ll just have to see what it’s like here. I hope it’s at least a LITTLE bit different. Apparently the nights get cool, that’s the rumor, anyway. And it’ll just be in the 80’s all day long. I am so looking forward to that.
See, I like the September/October BERS. But not so much the other two, at least in SLC. It got too cold. And by the time January hit I was ready to die. So I am looking forward to winter for the first time in my life.
See Wizzers, being a CA girl, I feel just the opposite- I had 70 degree winters all my life, and I totally dig having “real” winter now. Granted, Northwest winters are not MIDwest winters- we’re lucky (or unlucky, however you look at it) to get even 6″ of snow… just enough to be pretty, not too much to be livable.
I hope your first AZ winter is just what you need. By the way, I have another friend who lives in AZ (Hi G!) and from what I understand, winter is when everyone comes out and does stuff, because it’s suddenly not TOO hot anymore.
Love the BERS. Right there with you, baby.
I am with you, girl. I felt the first autumnal breeze tonight! I got giddy. Truly, I did.
I have never been as eager for fall to arrive as I am this year. The BERs will be fully celebrated in our house!
The trees and leaf-jumping opportunities in your yard sound fabulous.
So cute! It almost makes me wish I didn’t live in L.A…. oh wait – no it doesn’t. I don’t care how charming the cold is, I have to live somewhere where flip flops can be worn year round. Although the prettiness of your post does tempt me
I’m with you on the BERS. Love how you wrote about it, too! So glad that you changed your mind and are back to blogging!
It’s my favorite time of the year too. Although I’d really love for the temps to reflect the season…….
